Discovering the Vila do Abraão Historical Circuit in Ilha Grande

Greetings travelers! Today I want to share with you a fascinating route to explore the rich historical heritage of Vila do Abraão in Ilha Grande: the famous Historical Circuit (T1), with extensions to the beautiful Praia Preta and Praia do Galego.

Vila do Abraão Historical Circuit (T1)

This trail is perfect for those who want to learn about the island’s past through its ruins and historical monuments, while enjoying a pleasant walk in nature.
Starting point
The tour begins in the center of Vila do Abraão, near the main pier. Look for the signs for the T1 trail (Historical Circuit) to start your adventure.
History of the region
Before Portuguese colonization, Ilha Grande was inhabited by the Tupinambás and Tamoios indigenous people, who lived in harmony with nature using the resources of the sea and the forest for their subsistence. These native peoples left their mark on the island, and some archaeological remains such as pottery fragments and sambaquis (shell mounds) have been found in various parts of the island, including the Vila do Abraão region.
Main points of interest
Ilha Grande Aqueduct
Just a few minutes’ walk away you will find this impressive aqueduct built in the 19th century. Its stone arches that cut through the vegetation offer a perfect picture for photographs. The aqueduct was built to supply water to the Lazaretto and the local population.
Lazaretto Ruins
Continuing along the trail you will reach the ruins of the old Lazaretto, a complex that functioned as a quarantine hospital for immigrants between 1884 and 1913. This place played a crucial role during the yellow fever and cholera epidemics that hit Brazil at the end of the 19th century.
Praia Preta
Deviating slightly from the main circuit, you will find Praia Preta, a charming dark sand beach (hence its name) surrounded by lush vegetation. It is a perfect place to take a break and cool off in its calm waters.
Praia do Galego
Continuing a little further from Praia Preta, you will reach Praia do Galego, a smaller and less visited beach that offers an intimate and peaceful atmosphere. Its crystal-clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and observing marine life.
Mirador del Circuito Histórico
During the tour you will find several points with panoramic views towards the bay of Vila do Abraão and the Atlantic Ocean. On clear days, you can even see the mainland coast.
